The True Voice Award

In 2022, the As One’s creative teamKimberly Reed, Laura Kaminsky and Mark Campbell—created the True Voice Award. The TVA, which the team is also funding, is intended to help support the training of transgender and non-binary opera singers, as well as increase their visibility in the industry. The award will be given every two years and is administered by Washington National Opera and its Cafritz Young Artists program.

The first recipient of the True Voice Award
is Katherine Goforth.

Katherine Goforth’s recent engagements have included a joint recital with Julia Bullock at the Dallas Symphony’s Women in Classical Music Symposium, where she also received a Career Advancement Award and spoke in a panel discussion, the tenor soloist in Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 with the Bozeman, Walla Walla, and Yakima Symphony Orchestras, a recording of Elisabeth Claude Jacquet de La Guerre’s Ester with Byron Schenkman, a Schubertiade with Wenwen Du, Emily Webb in Thornton Wilder’s Our Town with Fuse Theatre Ensemble, and residencies at Boston Conservatory and Whitman College. Katherine was a member of the International Opera Studio of Oper Köln and is an alumna of the Juilliard School, St. Olaf College, Britten-Pears Young Artist Programme, Franz Schubert Institut, Heidelberger Frühling Liedakademie, Georg Solti Accademia, and Boston Wagner Institute. Katherine is a dramaturg for Opera Theatre Oregon’s upcoming project Nu Nah-Hup, a collaboration with Rose Ann Abrahamson, great-great-grandniece of Sacajawea and an Agai-Dika culture bearer, flutist Hovia Edwards, and composer Justin Ralls. She is an Instructor of Voice at Clark College.
